Research Associate/Technician I – Strain Development

Triton Algae Innovations Ltd., an innovative future-food technology company that is developing algae as an alternative protein and for use in alternative meats, is seeking a Research Technician at our San Diego, CA facility. Triton is looking to hire individuals to assist the research and development team in developing novel strains of algae with unique characteristics and developing/scaling fermentation protocols to produce these algae. These individuals will work under the guidance of scientists to identify desired phenotypes and improve them in our selected strains or with scientist to develop novel fermentation processes. The role of the individuals hired will be to carry out experiments at bench scale through scale up. Under general supervision, these individuals will also record data, maintain equipment, troubleshoot experiments, and compile detailed reports of experiments.

Responsibilities

· Design and carry out experiments under the guidance of a scientist.

· Maintenance, organization, and stocking of strains

· Mutagenesis and screening for desired phenotypes

· Culture of microorganisms from deep well to flask scale.

· Performing biochemical assays and assay development

· DNA isolation, preparation, and PCR. Experience with NGS and NGS data is a plus.

· Keep an organized notebook. Prepare reports and presentations on a regular basis.

· Assist in developing fermentation protocols (250mL – 6L fermenters)

· Assist in process validation in Triton’s pilot facility (up to 150L fermentation vessels)

· Prep various types of media

· Read, follow, update, and create new SOPs

Qualifications/Requirements

· Bachelor’s or Associates degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or related field.

· Prefer direct relevant laboratory experience in a Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular biology, or similar laboratory setting.

· 0-2 years industrial experience.

· Great sterile technique and a desire to learn is required.

· Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

· Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.).
