San Diego Algae Company Joins Ranks of the Plant Based Food Association
May 2018 - Triton Algae Innovations, a San Diego-based startup company focused on new food and nutritional products derived from algae, has joined the membership of the Plant Based Food Association (PBFA). PBFA is a new and rapidly expanding trade association devoted to educating the public and policymakers on the importance of plant-based foods, and related communications and policy priorities.
“We are seeing a growing interest in algae-based ingredients, and are happy to support this sector”, said Michele Simon, executive director of the PBFA.
Joining the PBFA makes perfect sense from a consumer and market perspective, stated Dr. Xun Wang, president and CEO of Triton. “PBFA is an excellent platform from which to further leverage Triton’s efforts to reach both consumers and industry players who are interested in what we bring to the proverbial table. We are excited to be part of the PBFA team, and hope to be able to help in their outreach and advocacy regarding the benefits of plant-based foods, such as our nutritious micro-algae, and how they can help to improve the health and well-being of consumers and the environment world-wide”.
Triton’s initial product is an all-natural algae powder, which is high in protein, essential amino acids, Vitamin A, and Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. An independent expert panel recently concluded that Triton’s algae is GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe), meaning that it has been shown, based on scientific procedures, to be safe for its intended use in foods. Wang noted that Triton is in active discussions with several global food brands interested in a range of potential applications for Triton’s algae as a healthy and sustainable source of alternative protein, in existing or new food products.
